 A classy and elegant living room makeover.Read along to find out more details about the makeover and how it all came together…..

Here are the before shots from a few months ago.As scant furnishings downplayed the potential in this cozy room, much needed updates were in order. Considering it’s the first room you see when you enter the home, goal was to create a space that would leave a lasting impression of the homeowner’s style .With neutral walls, high vaulted ceiling and rich dark wood banisters, the room had great potential for transformation. The all neutral background cleared the way for a colorful palette of peacock hues while really lightening things up.

Design Goal:

When my friend/client had approached me to help transform her living room and filled out the Verve questionnaire, she had expressed a penchant for peacock inspired decor, she had also expressed her desire for a space with a traditional aesthetic but with a minimalistic touch[clean, no clutter]. That’s right a traditional design that’s minimalistic, was tricky to accomplish but I took her peacock inspiration and ran with the idea of incorporating some colorful peacock pizzazz into the space to transform it into an elegant living that will also align with the minimalistic yet traditional look she was vying for.The living room walls painted in a dewy neutral color  served as the perfect canvas to inject some color and allow the decor and furnishings take center stage.

Above is the initial design plan /mood board that was  conceptualized  ,it got revised during the course of the design process to factor in budget, time and logistics  and this is how it all came together.

Color choices 

The color palette was drawn from the majestic beauty of the peacock plumage with dazzling splashes of teal, turquoise, blues, greens and hints of purple, inviting neutrals ,dark woods and few hits of sophisticated metallics and shimmering jewel tones. A beige or white space is the perfect canvas for a vibrant splash of peacock color.

Choice of furnishings/Accents and Decor:

Speaking of seating, since it was a small space a three seater sofa from Pier1 in neutral Linen with a gorgeous bronze nail head trim and a Teal accent chair with pin tucked back add just the right amount of style and function to the space.

We looked far and wide for the choice of curtains, but budget and time constraints narrowed down the choices  and we zeroed in on the beautiful shimmery -white sheers from Laura Ashley [on sale score!].Since the windows already has wooden blinds installed,It was a conscious choice to stick to sheers to give the room an airy and minimalistic appeal while allowing the accent colors to play up,but  jazzed them up a bit to create a custom look by using  jewel  embellished  napkin rings as tiebacks [a DIY hack…more on that].It’s a simple and inexpensive way to pack  in that glam look. Down the road, the curtains can be switched with olive or lime green ones hung high for a contrasting effect.

To complement the existing dark wood coffee table and the gorgeous rich wooden banisters of the house, I chose side tables to the same effect but in a round shape to balance all the angular pieces in the room. The Teal chair goes very well with the Teal and jewel tone cushions with peacock motifs [one of my favorite pieces in the room]. The large scaled carved wooden plaque [[another favorite] was hung over the sofa, to create a beautiful focal point as we enter the space.The beauty of the Mirror plus console pairing is that it will subtly reflect the art work above the sofa while creating a balanced look on either sides of the room.

An interesting Moroccan inspired mirror over a dark wooden console table to the left of the room balance all the exotic art and beauty on the right side of the room .I love the shimmer and warmth that the mirror, DIY custom floral arrangement and the candle bring in to the console area. I can envision so many beautiful vignettes for every season on that console. The dark wood coffee table was the only piece that would be reused in the new design.The large scale mirror and Artwork created a serene backdrop, plus the illusion of more space.

Another favorite piece is the Violet and Blue Ombre vase filled with an eclectic mix of peacock plumage and floral arrangements casts a vibrant touch. I used pops of blues and greens to decorate the stairwell and chose translucent / opalescent vases in greens and blues for the decor .All the glass pieces in the space reflect the light making the space look more airy and open while picking up on the hues in the room’s color palette. The faceted glass wall art on the staircase wall casts a shimmery glow in the right colors.I love how all the neutral tones in the larger pieces (the curtains, the sofa, etc.) temper everything so the room still feels cohesive and not chaotic.Peacock canvas artwork in subtle hues grace the stairwell.

The small carved stool from India is such a versatile tiny piece of accent furniture to dress up the little nook ,love the quaint nook [Zen spot] next to the Accent chair ,it’s also at arm’s reach and makes for an elegant vignette display. The mercury glass base of the lamp shades adds just the right amount of sparkle to the space.

But like you know, when it comes to a home, you can never say you are DONE! Down the road I can envision a custom stencil treatment or wallpaper on the stairwell and a nice large rug will really pull everything together (always a plus with a floating seating area) and will definitely add more warmth and charm to the entire space. Layered in with rich textures, colors and exotic art work, the room came alive and is infused with charm and style . The splendid combination of dark rich woods, deep teals, sandy whites and crisp splashes of peacock hues creates a beautiful medley, giving the space a classic and timeless appeal. That’s the inside scoop on an elegant space full of inviting style. I can’t wait to see what you guys think!
